Aragorn Laish

September 16, 1943 ~ April 18, 2022 (age 78)

It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Aragorn (Ari) Laish on Monday, April 18th, at the Brookshire Nursing Center in Hillsborough, NC.

Born in Leicester, England on the 16th of September, 1943, Ari was born into a world filled with travel and adventure.

Before settling down in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in the 1980’s, Ari lived on a Kibbutz in Israel where he worked on a banana plantation. He also joined the Israeli Army but was discharged for refusing to carry a gun.

His travels took him to Libya as a child and later to Australia, then Israel, and finally the US.

Ari was briefly married to Elizabeth Robbins and always remembered that time fondly. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Carol Sanks, and by his older brother Mike and his little sister Kim.  His only living relative, Kathryn Carruthers, resides in the UK.

He was the truest of friends who always followed through on anything he said he would do. He was a lover of music of all types and went above and beyond to share that love with others. The friendships he cultivated on the WIRE band website is a perfect example.

He was a lover of cats, birds and his garden, as well as being a long-time fan of the Tar Heels.

Ari was a technology enthusiast and a backgammon master.

He was a dear friend and will be greatly missed.

A funeral service will be held at 5pm on Saturday, May 21st, at the Lockridge Cemetery (1000 Willbea Rd., Durham, NC). Bring your fond memories of Ari to share. Afterwards, in honor of Ari’s love of music, the Bulltown Strutters will lead a New Orleans second line parade over to the Lockridge Picnic Shelter where light refreshments will be served. (
