Debra Smith

Mebane, NC:   Debra Lee Smith, 62, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at her residence in Mebane. At this time, the family is planning a celebration of life sometime in the future, details will be disseminated when they are available.

Debra was born November 17, 1960 in Kingston, New York to the late Gordon Purhamus and Henrietta Wells Cox. Debbie was full of life. Her family and friends meant the world to her. She was an amazing athlete, earning several awards in high school. She loved to play softball, and fish. If you had the privilege to know Deb, you would know that she also loved football. During the season, you could find her drinking coffee, and watching her Dallas Cowboys and The Ohio State Buckeyes, she had outfits for game day for each of her favorite teams. Deb also loved music. If you happened to see her driving around town, she was probably listening to Reba, Tanya Tucker, Wynonna Judd, Elvis or The Cranberries.

Debra did serve her country and enlisted in the US Army Reserves in 1982 as a Unit Supply Specialist. She was honorably discharged in 1988. Deb was a proud American, and was definitely proud of her service.  Debra also received an Associate’s Degree from Ulster County Community College and would go on to work for the Department of Social Services.

She is predeceased by her parents; her step mother Judith Purhamus, and her sister Louise Kingery. Debra is survived by her son William Purhamus, her sister Lois Forbis, her brother Gordon Purhamus Jr. as well as several nieces and nephews.  Donations can be made to cancer research in honor of her courageous battle with cancer.
