We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Piedmont Cremation & Funeral Service
Donald R Ledford, 83, of Chapel Hill, died peacefully on September 9th 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was a dedicated Navy veteran. He enlisted in the Navy in 1957. During his career he served on many ships, afloat staffs and shore commands. While on active duty he was able to show his family many parts of the world, such as Naples (Italy), Lisbon (Portugal) and a number states in the United States. The family moved to Chapel Hill NC for his final tour of 30 years active service. In July 1987, Don retired as Master Chief, with many awards and commendations on his record.
After retirement, Don loved to spend time on the golf course and took regular family vacations to Florida, their 'home-away-from-home' - with Betty, Kim, William and Pam – making memories to cherish forever.
Whether on active duty or retired, Don met everyone with kindness, generosity and a great sense of humor.
A celebration of Don's life with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Cawtaba Heights Baptist Church (Miller Ave. in Marion, NC) with Steve Grindstaff officiating.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 63-years, Betty, his daughter Kimberly and son-in-law, William O'Conney, of Nashville NC - who is also his golfing buddy and best friend - Granddaughter, Tieraney Davis of Asheville NC, brother, Doug Ledford (and Irene) of Seminole FL, and many other family and friends.
Don was proceeded in death by his daughters, Donna Renee' Ledford and Pamela Annette Ledford.
Our family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at the UNC cancer center. They took exceptionally good care of Don through his journey. And to all the employees in the infusion center and the lab, who made his many days there easier.
