Florence Claflin Laska Shirley, the strong willed and pragmatic matriarch of a large, loving family passed into eternal life on July 3, 2021 at home in Pittsboro, NC.
She was born on November 11, 1933 in Titusville, PA. A child of the depression, she was hard working and devoted to providing for her family, friends, and community. With a caregiver's heart she helped raise many children always providing a safe home, delicious food, loving hugs, and stern discipline. Some called her mom, some grandma, and to others she was affectionately referred to as "Flo." Her door and heart were always open. If you were seeking advice or guidance she was always ready with frank and honest words. She spent many years working as an LPN nurse and started the nurses' union in Titusville, PA. She was a past president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and volunteered at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Warren, PA. In her free time she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, listening to country music, polka dancing, and spending time with her cats and dogs.
To respect her wishes that reflect a humble, well-lived life, Flo will be interred in Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford, NC overlooking the pond at the wood's edge.
Cremation arrangements entrusted to Piedmont Cremation & Funeral Service of Graham, NC.
