James Houston Hatley, III “Trip” 68; was born on January 9, 1953 to Jim and Sadie Hatley in Burlington, NC. He passed away peacefully on Friday, March 5, 2021, at the Hospice House in Burlington after a year of failing health. Trip grew up in Burlington, a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church where he served in many capacities including Church Council President. Although his membership moved, he left a piece of his heart at Macedonia.
Trip and family moved from Burlington in 1996. He had a 30 year successful career in Newspaper advertising in which he achieved many awards and accolades for his creativity and leadership. After retirement he and his wife moved back to Burlington.
Trip was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of The Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He was a very talented singer and musician, performing in various bands throughout his life. He was a member of various service clubs and community organizations throughout the years. His interests and life experiences were varied and exciting, just like he was! He was a licensed pilot and loved flying. He enjoyed scuba diving, motorcycles, boating...and the list goes on. He loved God, he loved his family, and he loved life.
Trip is predeceased by his parents, James Houston Hatley, Jr and Sadie Suggs Hatley and his sister, Karen Moyle Hatley. He is survived by his wife, his “queen”, Pat Hatley; two children, Andy Hatley with wife Kari of Gastonia, NC and Jillian Hatley Glawson with husband Greg of Prosper, Texas. He was blessed to have five beautiful and talented grandchildren, Eva, James, Caroline, Owen, and Henry.
Trip was a wonderful husband, a great father, and a good friend. He will be missed, and never forgotten.
A Memorial service will be held at Lighthouse Bible Church, 1310 W. Webb Avenue, Burlington, NC on Monday, March 8, at 1 PM. Due to Covid, there will be no visitation.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Lighthouse Bible Church or Authoracare Hospice of Burlington NC.
