American Veteran

William Leonard Merritt

August 6, 1954 ~ August 13, 2021 (age 67)

Leonard Merritt fell asleep in death Aug 13th at 5:18 pm here in our home under hospice care after a 23-month fight to survive from a stroke he had while driving the transfer truck. He sustained critical injuries when the truck turned over. He fought hard through it all but he never regained his physical strength.

Leonard was the most thoughtful man I'd ever met, he was my protector, my partner and friend. He had the biggest heart. He would give just about anything you needed or wanted. Leonard was also a very funny guy. He made you laugh so quick that if you were sipping a beverage when he cracked a joke, you'd spit it out laughing.

Leonard was born and grew up in Burlington NC, lived here all of his life, always reminiscing about his memories. He joined the Haw River fire dept. as a volunteer shortly after the Marine Corp. He stayed with the fire dept. until he retired. As a First Responder over the years, he received awards such as firefighter of the year, Officer of the year, and the bravest. He received his awards over his 25-year run. Also, Leonard studied the Bible with Jehovah’s witnesses beginning in 2012 where he gained appreciation for Bible truths. He was comforted by the words Jesus spoke regarding the resurrection hope where the Bible gives a person spiritual strength when facing death. (Hebrews 6:1, 2; John 5:28, 29).

He is survived by his wife Melody Merritt, sons Jerry Merritt, Jim, and Dave. Ronnie Minor, daughter Kasey Minor, brother Lawrence Merritt, sisters Linda and Larae, along with 13 grandchildren, and 1 great grandson.

He was preceded in death by sister Lois Johnson, and son Anthony Watkins.

We look forward to seeing him again in the near future. He is greatly missed by all he touched with his humor and love.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, Sept, 5th 2021 at 2PM on Zoom due to Covid restrictions at this time. The Zoom link is located below the obit as a live stream feed. Passcode 129900
